1½ cups Bob's Red Mill All Purpose Flour - gluten free
salt and pepper
½ teaspoon McCormick Ground Cayenne Pepper - gluten free
McCormick Garlic Powder - gluten free
Sweet Baby Ray's BBQ Sauce - gluten free
swiss cheese, thinly sliced
2 pounds lean ground beef
lettuce
1 yellow onion, thinly sliced into rounds
cooking oil
1 quart buttermilk
Instructions
Pour buttermilk in a large bowl and add the onions. Soak onions for about 1 hour.
Make 4 to 6 patties and season with garlic powder, salt and pepper.
Pour a good amount of cooking oil in a Dutch oven or fryer. Heat until 375 degrees f.
In a large bowl, combine flour, cayenne pepper, salt and pepper. Using a tong grab some onions and let it drip to remove excess buttermilk then place in the flour mixture to coat. Remove excess flour and fry until golden brown about 1 to 2 minutes then transfer to a plate lined with paper towels. Continue cooking the rest of the onions.
Meanwhile, heat grill to medium high heat and grill the burgers according to doneness about 3 to 4 minutes per side. Top burgers with the swiss cheese.
Assemble the burgers according to your liking. Top with bbq sauce and fried onions. Serve
Notes
Cook the onions in small batches and gently separate them using a tong or fork.
